A Royal Visits Brixton
I’ve been a member of the British royal family my whole life and while I do enjoy it, sometimes I just want to get away. Although I may not be the crown prince I am still a prince all the same and have been followed all my life, I just need a break. So one day I decided to take my fiancée to a place where I knew I could walk around with her and not be attacked by paparazzi, somewhere I could hold her hand.
For that, I took her to South London to visit Brixton Market.
Brixton Market is located in Brixton, South London, England. Brixton is easiest to get to by tube. Brixton Market shops are generally open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm seven days a week. Simply turn right when you get off Brixton tube station and cross Atlantic Road and then turn right into Brixton Station Road Market. Brixton Market is mainly a produce and meat market that is best known for African and Caribbean produce, but there are also many restaurants/cafes all over Brixton Market.
Brixton Market is a great place to go if wanting to cook up a big meal due its fresh produce and variety of meat. At Brixton Market, Harry Otto and Son offers different types of fish, live crabs, catfish and lots of other seafood that is imported from all over the world. However, the chicken and pork all come from Smithfield Market. Brixton Market is run by the Brixton Market Traders’ Federation, which means it’s only run by the traders themselves, not owned by a private corporation or run by the government. This means Brixton Market is one of a kind. Any profit the traders make goes back to Brixton. Brixton Market is also unique because they don’t overcharge traders. Their goal is to keep the market pitches affordable, so every trader can continue to raise the community feeling that is Brixton Market. Brixton Market has a goal and that is to create more opportunities for now and for the future by creating more jobs and volunteer opportunities.
In addition, Brixton Market is currently growing plants and flowers on the street with the help of Brockwell Community Greenhouses. Brixton Market holds a farmers’ market every Sunday from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm, which is full of useful groceries like fresh fruit, vegetables right from the soil, cheeses, flowers, organic meat and poultry, artisan bread and even cakes.
On Friday, Brixton Market has a special Friday market that includes delicious street food to start the weekend off right.
On the second Saturday of the month, the streets are lined with handmade crafts, modern art and new fashion from independent designers and makers at the Makers’ Market. You can also learn how Brixton became and still continues to be south London’s shopping hub by joining the Brixton Markets heritage walk at 2:30 pm.
On the third Saturday of the month, head down to Brixton Market to look for vintage clothing, jewelry, shoes, and furniture because the retro and vintage are being held. There is even a vintage sweet stall at the retro and vintage market.
On the first Saturday of the month, there is bakers and flea market at Brixton Market. On the fourth and fifth Saturday of the month, there is the Brix Mix Market, which includes all traders. There will be many stalls including the Bakers’ and Flea Market, Retro and Vintage Market and the Makers’ Market, so you will absolutely find whatever you are looking for.
Near Brixton Market, there is the Brixton Market and Market Row, which offers food from around the world. There will be European, Indian, Asian, African, South American and the Caribbean food all available to you.
To get to Brixton Village, turn right when you get out of the Brixton tube station and cross Atlantic Road, then turn right into Brixton Station Road Market and at the crossroads turn right into Pope’s Road Market. There will be a blue door, which will be the entrance to Brixton Village Arcade under the blue bridge, which is only about 100m on your left.
To get to Market Row, essentially take the same route, but when you turn into Pope’s Road Market the crossroads to Atlantic Road will be 100m ahead, turn left and the entrance to Market Row is one the other side of the road meaning opposite to Brixton Village.
To get to Reliance Arcade, turn left out of the tube station crossing Electric Avenue and the entrance is only 30m on your left. Brixton Village, Reliance Arcade, and Market Row are open 8:00 am to 11:30 pm every day except Monday when they close at 6:00 pm.
Brixton Market has really quite a lot to offer and it is definitely worth checking out while in London. The many special markets Brixton Market offers makes it extra special. It is also truly just a great place to go for fresh produce and quality meat for a fulfilling dinner. The meat offered at Brixton Market is vast, so it’s easy to choose any meat and make a fabulous meal out of it. The produce is extremely fresh, thus it’s a perfect meal between the meat options and the fresh vegetables/fruits.
